“Veiling one’s own faults and or others is definitely a virtuous matter, in terms of piety and fulfilling religious duties, we all know that. But have you ever thought of the matter in light of your pursuit of success?” Some people brag about their mistakes, or even sins, out of erroneous belief that this renders them in the sight of others “courageous and daring”- this is far from true. Allah Almighty says, “If someone honors Allah’s sacred things, that is better for him his Lord’s sight.”- – {Quran 22:30} So who’s much important for you, who should you care to have a pleasant image of yourself. Be watchful!! Similarly picking up on people’s mistakes and even sins is equally abhorrent. This is the most awful thing you can do. It instills hatred and animosity amongst people, uncovers their personal faults perhaps before those whom they wish to preserve a good image, and over and above, renders you a backbiter, thereby losing much moral ground. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: ‘All of my community will be given safety except for those who flaunt themselves. An aspect of flaunting yourself is to do an action by night and then in the morning, when Allah has veiled you, to say, “O so-and-so! I did such-and-such yesterday,” removing Allah’s veil in the morning after your Lord has veiled you in the night.'” – [Agreed upon] Hence, engaging in backbiting and taking pride in uncovering people’s mistakes encourages others to speak badly about you and pick on you- and consequently you lose your reputation and image in the sight God as well as in the sight of people, which is a true destruction to your journey towards a successful life. Be watchful of what you say and do, for what you do returns back to you. By: Maha Youssuf Posted on: January 31, 2012
