Hard work and dedication is part and parcel of success, for any pursuit, and in any field- also whether it’s a religious pursuit or a worldly one.
Devotion or if you wish to call it in our modern age most commonly used term- dedication- links up the heart (soul), mind and body of each individual and employ them for best service of his/her pursuit. Division among an individual’s three dimensions of being can be quite detrimental to any pursuit of success; in this Dunya and the other.
Listen to what Imam Abu Hamed al-Ghazali said to his students about the matter.
’My dear son…
By Allah (SWT)! If you travel you will see wonders at every stage. Devote your soul, for the most important thing in this matter is devotion of the soul. Dhun Nun Al-Misri (RA)19 said to one of his disciples:
”If you have the power to devote your soul, come to me; and if not, then do not busy yourself in the idle practices of the Sufis.”’
