One should stand up for his rights and fight ferociously to claim them, yet disputing as an attitude should be avoided as much as possible. It’s a waste of time, energy and human relations. It’s a detrimental weapon jeopardizing your success. It’s a guaranteed detrimental weapon jeopardizing your pursuit for success- So be ware. Disputing sucks one’s potential and employs it to fight against that which he has dispute with, instead of harnessing such energy to achieve and get closer to one’s aim and aspired goals. Listen to what Imam Abu Hamed al Ghazali, may Allah’s mercy descend on Him, told his student regarding this matter. “Do not dispute with anyone in any matter as far as possible. For in argumentation lies much harm and its evil is greater than its benefit. It is the source of all reprehensible qualities such as showing off, envy, arrogance, rancor, enmity, boasting, etc. Of course, if there arises a question between you and an individual or a group and your intention is that truth may become manifest and not lost, debating is permissible. But there are two signs of such a desire:
  1. That it makes no difference whether the truth is revealed by your tongue or the tongue of another.
  2. That you prefer discussion in private than in public.”
On another note, avoiding disputes for trivial matters, or matters that can be sorted out without having to get into disputes, makes you heard and when you raise a flag regarding a serious matter. So save the fight till when fight is needed.
